With a plethora of shampoos, conditioners, cleansers and more on the market, understanding the different products available and figuring out the hair care products and regimen that’s right for you can be quite challenging.
So what exactly are hair cleansers?
Hair cleansers are mild formulations that are gentle on your scalp and hair, and are free of the harsh detergents, sulphates and many other chemicals often found in shampoos. They are relatively simple formulations of oil and water, designed to cleanse your hair gently. Your hair retains its natural oils and stays soft & nourished.
What’s the difference between a cleanser and a shampoo?
While the main purpose of both shampoos and cleansers is to clean your hair and scalp, shampoos are formulated for heavy-duty cleansing and often contain harmful chemicals and detergents that can damage your hair. Hair cleansers, on the other hand, are designed to gently remove dirt and excess oil from your hair, while still retaining some of the nourishing natural oils.
Should I use a cleanser?
As is the case with any product applied topically or ingested, the suitability of cleansers to an individual depends on a number of factors, including the type of hair, scalp condition, nutrition & diet, lifestyle, genetics, the amount of hair care products being used, frequency of washing, etc.
The best advice is to test out different products and ingredients to figure out the best combination of products and optimal hair care regimen for you. But as a general thumb rule, cleansers might be a better fit for you over shampoos if you happen to wash your hair frequently, have used hair colouring products recently or have a sensitive scalp. In case you use a lot of hair-styling products regularly, using a cleanser to wash your hair might not be ideal. Instead, a shampoo would be more suitable for removing the buildup of product from your scalp and hair.
How do I use a hair cleanser?
Step 1: Rinse your hair, preferably with warm water. This will remove the surface layer of dirt and grime, and open up your pores for more efficient cleansing.
Step 2: You can apply a generous amount of cleanser to your wet hair since cleansers are mild and don’t contain harmful chemicals.
Step 3: Start by working the cleanser into your scalp and gently massaging your scalp in a circular motion. Unlike with shampoos where it isn’t advisable to expose your scalp directly to the chemicals, using a cleanser on your scalp directly is recommended.
Step 4: From the scalp, move down the length of your hair and work the cleanser into your hair gently and thoroughly. Cleansers do not lather as much as shampoos as they are sulphate free and milder. However, they clean just as well as shampoos.
Step 5: After waiting a few minutes, you can proceed to wash off the cleanser. Ensure that you continue to massage your scalp and hair as you’re rinsing with water.
Step 6: Do not skip the conditioner! Apply a gentle conditioner to your hair after partly drying off your hair. Leave the conditioner in for a few minutes before rinsing it off thoroughly. Do ensure that you apply the conditioner only to your hair, and not to your scalp directly.
